Dear Families:

First of all, what an incredible Labor Day Weekend we have, with perfect weather, a town filled with people helping the local economy, and a nice long weekend after our successful launch of the school year.

Last week was our first full week, as you well know. I think we all were adjusting to a different pace after a summer of no homework and no classes, but adjust we did, and it feels really good to be back in the flow.

This year is notable for a number of reasons, including:
  • We have the largest ninth grade class in school history, with 183 students.
  • Total enrollment is 788 students, also a record. This figure includes 45 international students, a very nice increase as we continue to rebuild the international program from the depths of Covid. (By the way, we are seeking host families, so if interested, please shoot me an email and I will connect you to the right people. I have hosted, and it is a wonderful experience.)
  • Students are enjoying the successful first phase of our renovation of the Smith Center. The lower level and third floors have been reconfigured and upgraded, with better lighting, common spaces to facilitate group work, and (coming in the next few days) new furniture.
  • Our cell phone policy – each teacher collects cell phones at the beginning of class and returns them at the end – is working smoothly and everyone is discovering that it's really no big deal to separate from our phones in the interest of greater academic productivity.
  • Auditions and rehearsals are underway for the fall play, Radium Girls, which highlights an important and little known slice of our country’s history and industrial development. Thanks to a generous donor, the Riley Center has newly installed state-of-the-art lighting that enhances all of our stage productions.
  • Athletics is up and running. BBA parent and Vermont soccer referee Katie Pinkus shared important thoughts about fan behavior, with a plea not to yell at refs no matter how bad we think the call is. Please heed this advice!
Most of all, I urge all students to get off to a good start. September is a really important month academically, and every single student has the potential to contribute to the engaging, vigorous learning experiences that set the standard and are the hallmark of a BBA education.

Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your loved ones.

Sincerely,
Mark H. Tashjian
Headmaster
